Chromebook

Veritenza for Chromebooks.

A Chrome extension that records how work is done in the browser · version 0.4.0. It takes two minutes to install and one to sign in.

Company-managed Chromebooks

Your Google administrator adds it for everyone

Best for a company: one setting installs it on every Chromebook, keeps it up to date, and people cannot remove it. Send this section to whoever runs your Google Workspace.

  1. In the Google Admin console, open Devices › Chrome › Apps & extensions › Users & browsers and choose the organisational unit (or the whole company).
  2. Click the yellow + button, then Add Chrome app or extension by ID.
  3. Enter the extension ID, choose From a custom URL, and enter the update URL:
    Extension IDbhfdecinlcgiamjfmnhbghlpacfdekcn
    Update URLhttps://app.veritenza.com/chromebook/updates.xml
  4. Set its Installation policy to Force install + pin to browser toolbar and click Save.
  5. Recommended: turn off Incognito mode for the same users (Devices › Chrome › Settings › Users & browsers); Veritenza does not run in incognito windows.

Chromebooks pick it up within a few hours, or at once after a restart. Each person then signs in once (below). New versions install by themselves. If the Chromebook has an asset ID set in the Admin console, Veritenza uses it as the computer's name.

Your own Chromebook, or a pilot

Add it yourself in Developer mode

For a Chromebook your company does not manage. It is the same extension, but you install updates yourself.

  1. Download Veritenza for Chromebook
  2. Open the Files app, find veritenza-chromebook-0.4.0.zip in Downloads, right-click it and choose Extract all. Rename the folder it makes to Veritenza and move it to My files. Veritenza runs from this folder, so keep it.
  3. In Chrome, go to chrome://extensions and turn on Developer mode (top right).
  4. Click Load unpacked and choose the Veritenza folder (it contains manifest.json).

If Developer mode is greyed out, your Chromebook is managed by an organisation: ask its administrator to add Veritenza using the steps on the left.

Then sign in (everyone)

  1. A Veritenza tab opens by itself. If it doesn't, click the Veritenza icon next to the address bar (or under the puzzle-piece icon) and choose Sign in.
  2. Click Sign in with Google and choose your work account in the tab that opens.
  3. Back in the Veritenza tab, You're all set appears. Close the tab: Veritenza keeps working in the background.

The Veritenza icon shows its status: a green Recording when you click it; a red ! means it is not recording: either you are signed out, or its access to sites was turned off (click it and choose Allow).

Updates and help

  1. Company-managed: nothing to do; new versions install themselves.
  2. Developer mode: when the Veritenza icon says a newer version is available, download it above and open it in Files (it opens like a folder). Select everything in it, copy, open the folder you loaded it from (Veritenza, or labs1 if it was set up before the name changed) and paste, choosing Replace. Then on chrome://extensions click the ↻ reload button on Veritenza. You stay signed in.
  3. To remove it (Developer mode): chrome://extensions › Veritenza › Remove. Your company sees that the Chromebook stopped reporting.

On a Chromebook, Veritenza records work in the browser: which page is in front, what you click, how many keys you type. Anything more, such as page text, typed text or screenshots, only if your company switches it on; the Veritenza icon lists what is on. Never passwords or incognito windows. Apps outside the browser show only as "another app". Everything about what is recorded.
